The more she learned, the worse it seemed. “It is elegant,” she admitted one night. “Whoever created this knew exactly what they were doing. They wanted to erase us without killing us.” Three months later, half a million people were infected. Then Ember caught the plague. She woke one morning confused and frightened. “Who am I?” she asked the attendants. “You are Ember. Leader of Sanctuary.” “I do not remember that.” The attendants tried explaining her life, her achievements, her beliefs. But Ember looked at them with suspicion.

Leo asked. I thought about the fire that had broken through my binding, the ancient fury that had opened its eyes inside me and refused to be extinguished. I thought about Marcus, out there somewhere, still burning with whatever twisted rage drove him, and about how different that kind of fire was from what I wanted to build here. "Ember House," I said slowly, testing the words. "Because an ember isn't the destructive part of a fire. It's what's left after everything burns down — small, but still warm. Still alive. Still capable of starting something new if you're patient with it."

I say flatly. "Oh, but I am!" Ember actually claps her massive claws together like an excited child. "It's been so lonely on this mountain since my clan exiled me. No one to talk to except passing travelers who run away screaming. No one to appreciate my vast intelligence and wit. No one to properly admire my magnificent hoard!" She's insane. Completely, utterly insane. Not evil or demonic, just bored and lonely and absolutely out of her mind. "We don't have time for games," I try to reason with her. "The demon invasion is happening now. People are dying now. We need your help now."

No family to let me down, or expectations I’d never asked for—just stories. And for a little while, stories were enough. The fireplace popped quietly in the corner, flames flickering over the floor-to-ceiling shelves and dusty scrolls. Ember Hills library was older than history itself, shelves brimming with tomes that murmured with magic even without being read. I sat curled in the overstuffed leather reading chair beneath one of the arched windows, the letter still pressed deep in the pocket of my coat, even though I’d read it so many times the edges were frayed.

Damien sighed. " We have to get going, but we will be back. The council requires this book back in their possession, " dad said, standing up. We hugged mom and nodded to dad before they left as well. I walked into the kitchen to fix something to eat, and Damien followed. He was silent, and I knew he was lost in thought. "Surely you can't still be upset with Ember for being human. She is clearly not just human." I told him and he sighed again.

They are led to the throne room where the queen of the witches sits. A woman steps forward and approaches the group. “Hello Rex, welcome back and who are they? So I can introduce them to the queen? " asks the woman. “I am Hector. Nice to meet you,” says Hector. “I am Ash. Lovely to meet you,.” says Ash. “I am Ruby, beautiful dress, .” says Ruby. The woman smiles and steps back. “My queen: Rex, Hector, Ash and Ruby from Ember City,” says the woman. The queen motions them forward. Hector and Rex come forward. Ash and Ruby stay back a few feet. All bow lightly out of respect for the queen.
