One Dark Window Book 3 Novels & Stories

Just double-checked my shelf. It's two books. The first is 'One Dark Window' and the sequel is 'Two Twisted Crowns'. Kinda clever how the titles work together, huh? The second one expands the world a lot, which I appreciated, but honestly the first had this tight, claustrophobic magic system that I adored. The whole duology wrapped things up pretty conclusively, which is nice these days when everything seems to stretch into a ten-book saga.

I remember waiting for the second one to come out. It felt like a long wait, but it was worth it to see how the story of the Shepherd King concluded. Some readers thought the pacing in the second book was slower because it split perspectives, but I liked getting a wider view of the misty, card-based world. Two books felt like the right amount for this particular tale—anything more might have diluted the eerie atmosphere.

Rachel Gillig is the brilliant mind behind this gothic fantasy masterpiece. The world feels complete, which makes a direct continuation seem unlikely to me.

That said, the magic system with the Providence Cards and the misty, gothic kingdom holds a lot of potential. I could maybe see a spinoff exploring a different set of characters or a prequel about how the cards were first created. The worldbuilding is rich enough to support more stories, but the main duology feels like a closed loop to me. For now, I'm content with the two books as they are—sometimes a story knows when to end.
