“If I hadn’t gone to him on my own, he wouldn’t have been able to kidnap me.” Timothy's eyes filled with concern as he looked at me. "How long has he been harassing you for money? Was he like this when you lived with him?" Taking a deep breath, I looked back at Timothy. It was time to be truthful, even though it was a truth I hardly wanted to acknowledge. "Bruce was my stepbrother, but I hardly considered him my sibling," I began, my voice trembling. "He was the reason I left home suddenly all those years ago.”

Instead, I just wanted more. His hand moved from my back to loosen the towel. It fell open slightly, exposing more skin to his touch. His lips blazed a trail from my neck to my chest, and when his mouth closed over my nipple through the damp fabric, I cried out. "Fuck," he growled. "The sounds you make..." This was so wrong. He was my stepbrother. My mate, yes, but mating with him could get us all killed. Marcus would lock me away. The Council would execute them. We were supposed to be staying apart, supposed to be fighting this...

I muttered to no one, the words sounding as empty as I felt. If someone had told me a few weeks ago that my stepbrother would turn out to be my... mate—ugh, that word—I would’ve laughed so hard I’d probably choke. What kind of lunatic crap even is that? But here I was, not laughing, because apparently, my life decided to become a full-blown supernatural soap opera. And the weirdest part?

“You have to stay in control. He’s your stepbrother. That’s all he is. That’s all he’ll ever be.” But my reflection didn’t look convinced. And deep inside, neither was I.

I asked tiredly, especially because he wasn't worth the trouble to me. “Yes! And now that you mention, I should also remind you that he's not on the market,” she flashed her engagement around me boastfully, “and he's even your stepbrother so don't get any disgusting ideas about latching yourself to him out of desperation,” she pointed a finger at me viciously as she issued an unnecessary warning.

Just the same coldness I remembered. I forced a polite nod. “Good evening.” She didn’t reply. Then footsteps echoed from the hallway. My stepbrother. He leaned against the banister, smirking. “If it isn’t the stealer of the company. The illegitimate charity case.” My jaw clenched. My fists curled at my sides, nails digging into my palm. “Still bitter?” I said quietly. “After all these years?” His smirk deepened. “Still pretending like you belong?”

"It's not like that. I mean... I do have some friends that have stuck by me. But... since your stepbrother started picking on me... most of them abandoned ship, you know?" Jenna nodded. She'd been a victim of bullying in primary school. She knew what it was like to be abandoned. "I'm so sorry he did that to you," Jenna said, suddenly becoming enraged at her evil stepbrother. How could he do something so cruel? "You have no need to be sorry!" Jacob cried, shocking her to a halt. He grabbed her by the shoulders. "Do you know how many people have stood up to him to defend me?" Jenna shook her head in the negative.

Ashley asks. The door creaks open and then he enters. A smile on his face. My worst enemy. Someone who I thought had died seven years ago. Someone whom I killed with my orders and made sure he was dead. Kayden. My stepbrother. He winks at me “Hello, brother

he moaned against my lips. That sound. That broken, beautiful sound. It shattered me. But just then, a sharp sound from downstairs ruined everything. Fuck! What was I even doing?! A vase shattered downstairs, followed by the voice of my father yelling at my mother. "You always take his side!" Lucas roared. The reality of who we were crashed down on me and it broke me as I saw him like the trash he was. Stepbrothers. I pulled myself away from him immediately, gasping for air.

Her fingers tightened around mine. I stood up again and looked at Damian. “You said you’re my stepbrother,” I began, trying to stay calm. “But Lucien never told me anything about you. The first time I heard your voice was the night I was kidnapped. I asked him who you were when I returned… but he refused to answer.” Damian’s jaw tightened. “He’s ashamed of me.” “Why?” “Because I’m his mistake. His hidden child. My mother was a rogue who never meant anything to him. He used her… then tossed her aside. But she gave him something he didn’t expect.”
