I quickly pulled it from my pocket and sighed in relief when I saw Lory’s name on the screen. “Hello?” I answered immediately, pulling the phone slightly away from my ear because of the noise outside. I could hear heavy g*nfire echoing in the background. Everything was happening so fast, but I had to stay calm. For Zebediah, and for myself. “Cass? Cassssss?” I put the phone back to my ear, ignoring the chaos in Lory’s background. “Thank God you finally called.” “Damn it! Mission failed! Mission failed!” Lory’s voice trembled with panic. “There’s a full-blown clash of clans happening out here, Cass! A bunch of barbarians just stormed in, driving hummers—no, worse—they’ve got insane w*apons!”

The clone's scream echoed off concrete walls as strobe lights erupted through the darkness. I dropped into a combat crouch, rifle sweeping the blackness—until a boot connected with my ribs. The impact sent me skidding across the interrogation room floor. My NVGs shattered against the wall. Naz's voice cut through the chaos: "Ambush! They knew we—" Gunfire drowned her out. The clone—the other me—thrashed against her restraints. "They're coming!" Blood dripped from her split lip. "The real trap is in sublevel five!"

I pounded on his arm as I looked at the man on the ground. “Let me down!” I yelled at Alessio but he ignored me, running through the reception and out the front doors, Callie slightly in front of him. It was luck, really, that Alessio had heard the man say there were explosives because as soon as we reached the car and reversed as far away from the building as we could, an explosion went off and the building went up in flames, the walls crumbling as the plume of debris rose in the sky. We made it out with seconds to spare. The smoke and fire reached into the sky, stretching long, red fingers toward the scorching sun before falling back to the building with a sigh of relief.

Lucas won, of course, but I am pretty sure he would still be buying the three of us ice cream. “Hey El, this claw machine is a scam. In fact, all of these are. You will just be wasting your tokens here,” Lucas said. They are already beside me. “I know, but I saw this cute little white cat and thought of you. I thought of giving it to you. Look, it looks like you. Especially when you are annoyed,” I responded, speaking what is on my mind. I was still playing the game while I spoke. This is getting irritating, why can’t this little cute cat just go with the claw?

I shook my head, “I—what? I didn't do anything! We were in a crash, Yasmine, a wolf—” Before I could finish, Yasmine lunged forward, grabbed a fistful of my hair and yanked me up to my feet. The sharp pain in my scalp made me gasp. “That little stunt you pulled at the game!” She hissed right into my face. “The official's kid! They followed us back, Trixie! The Northern pack retaliated!” My heart stopped. “No... it couldn't have—” Yasmine shoved me back down to the ground with everything she had. “It did!” She screamed, her voice cracking as a fresh wave of tears tracked through the dirt on her cheeks.

Now it was being tested again as Draven’s loyalists launched a desperate thrust toward the medical wing. Another ambush erupted ahead—rogue betas bursting from the treeline with guns and claws. I met the first one mid-leap, my jaws closing around his throat with a sickening crunch. Blood sprayed hot across my fur.
