Wolves gathered quietly around them, singing the low, ancient mourning song that made the air itself tremble.
I stood beside Edward, holding his hand as the flames rose into the night.
When the first sparks drifted toward the stars, I whispered under my breath, “For them. For every one we lost.”
Edward squeezed my hand. “And for everyone we still have.”
I turned my face up to the sky. The smoke twisted into strange shapes before dissolving. For a second, I thought I saw a flicker of eyes watching from beyond the clouds—gold, cruel, and burning with promise.
