The message barely has time to turn blue before the typing bubbles appear. My heart climbs directly into my throat. His reply pops up. Worth it though. My stomach flips. Be cool. I start typing again. Me too. I freeze. Nope. Already said that. Delete. Same. That works. I send it. And then I lean back against my pillow, staring at the screen like it might explode.

Just another one of his dry, stupid jokes—something about his dinner being so terrible he was convinced the restaurant was trying to assassinate him with undercooked chicken. He'd probably attached one of those ridiculous GIFs he was always finding, something animated and silly that was meant to make me laugh.
