I went to my desk and opened the draft again, the paragraph about coercion still waiting for one better verb. My fingers hovered over the keys. Outside, a sunbeam crossed the floorboards like a ribbon of gold tape marking a new boundary. I thought about the offer I’d just witnessed—love without cages—and decided to add four words to my article’s final section, where policy meets heart:
Consent is also abundance.
Later, we would serve papers in a lobby where Feld thought laws were suggestions. Later, the injunction would hold. Later, the quiet dinner would be a story we told ourselves on nights when the building felt like a body learning to breathe again.
