"Thank you," I said, and meant it. "For the warning, and for not assuming I needed convincing."
"You have never needed convincing about the things that actually matter to you," Conrad said, rising slowly from the chair. "You needed convincing about smaller things, occasionally. Border allocations. New construction. This was never going to be one of them."
He left shortly after, and I remained at my desk a long while, the fading afternoon light shifting slowly across the reports I was no longer reading.
