[Cordelia] In our five years of marriage, I have only stepped foot in this building 6 times. During each of those occasions, it had been for official reasons--The celebration of our union, and the annual employee mixer at the end of the fiscal year. Today is different. "You've got this, Cordy," Clark smiles at me encouragingly as he leaves me at the front door to the building. He had planned to come in with me, but a call from work pulled him away unexpectedly. Helios smiled back at her, a smile that suggested they became close during their journey. Everyone seemed to have improved their relationships, except for us.

Disoriented, she sat up slowly, her hair a wild mess around her face, tangled with remnants of her dreams. Then the door creaked open softly. Cordelia floated into the room. She was dressed in shimmering black silk that sparkled like the night sky. Her brown streaked hair was neatly pinned up, showing off her poise. Chloe recognized her from previous encounters, always the poised figure who seemed perfectly attuned to Valerius's every desire. Was she merely an assistant, servant, or something else entirely? “Good evening,” Cordelia said, her voice smooth and cool. “You’re awake.”

Cordelia stood in the center of the banquet hall dressed in a long, cream-yellow, light chiffon dress. She looked graceful and gorgeous, like a fairy fallen to earth. Everyone’s attention was attracted to her. The host was dumbstruck for a moment before he recomposed himself and took a cue card from his assistant. He coughed and began to introduce Cordelia with a grin. “Everyone, you must’ve guessed it.” The host’s voice was sonorous. “This is Ms. Cordelia Jenner. Not only is she the big boss behind the western suburbs’ project, but she’s also the CEO of three listed companies!”

This was a place where rich men came to indulge without consequences. Cordelia worked here under the name “Lia.” Tonight she wore a sheer black lace bodysuit that left very little to the imagination. The front plunged deep between her full, heavy breasts. The back was open all the way down to the top of her round ass. Her long braids were styled in an elegant high ponytail with loose curls framing her face. She looked beautiful. Seductive. And completely out of place in her own skin.

On those bad days, she keeps asking about Cordelia, my late daughter. Cordelia had Down syndrome and she was the most beautiful soul ever born into this fucked-up world. She passed away from heart disease when she was just eight years old. My beautiful baby girl. Her system couldn’t fight the heart disease that came with her Down syndrome. Cordelia was the light of my life. And I will never, ever get over that fucking pain I have over losing her.

Cordelia had listened in whenever she could, and little by little learned more than her cousin did. Flopping down onto her small bed, Cordelia revelled in a moment of relaxation. Her blue skirt landed around her like petals. Although her room was tiny, and sometimes chilly, she loved it. No one else ever climbed to the top of the house where she was tucked away. She had slowly collected the stubs of candles until she could fill her tiny windowsill. As she lit them, she felt as though she were casting a spell. Running her hands along her quilt, she could feel the scraps of her childhood dresses. She reached for one of the books she kept hidden behind her dresser. Lately she had been entranced

Sierra says. “Are you guys coming with Whitney and I to the surface lessons?” “Hell yeah,” Daniel tells her. “Whitney isn't going,” I glanced over at Avery who has been quiet this entire time. “Not now Avery,” I tell him. “Look, I get it that you guys don't know me.
