The fog was lifting from the streets outside the house and the streetlights were casting dim light that barely reached through the fog. Lola had brought her dress, the one she meant to wear tonight to the Winter Whimsy, and Melissa had laid hers out last night before they had dinner. The smell of frost and wet leaves breezed in through the crack in the window. They had hoped the fresh air would help lull them to sleep but it only made them think of all the winters that had come before and how this one was different in every way. Birds sang a quiet song that only grew more scarce the deeper into winter they came.

RYAN I adjusted the cufflinks on my tailored blazers as I strode down the lavish hallway leading to the ship's grand ballroom. I barely looked at the elaborate decorations lining the ship's corridor or the ocean view spilling through the floor-to-ceiling windows. For others, the Celestial Harmony represented luxury, romance and the perfect escape for the New Year. For me, it was a glorified office.

I straighten up, inhaling deeply to shake off the tension, and smile faintly at my daughter. (Sophia’s POV) Cinnamon scent mingled with roasted chestnut aromas to fill the air while snowflakes performed their dance beyond Alexander’s grand penthouse windows. An unnatural icy stillness enveloped the world outside where city lights flickered as minuscule stars. Inside warmth radiated from the crackling fireplace where stockings hung with care each embroidered with the names of our growing family.

The nights were the part I had come to love most. The cold of January had settled hard around the estate. The fire in our bedroom had been lit every evening for weeks, the way it had been lit in this house for a hundred winters, and the room had taken on the particular gold quiet of a place where two people are waiting, together, for something they want.

He moved up to the door and squinted out into the night. August looked out at the towering creature with black fur, which didn’t look their way, as Rufus slowly mouthed the words, “He is.”

I looked back through the glass doors towards the apartment. Towards Jane. Towards Elliot. Towards Caroline. Towards David. Towards Hailey. Towards the tiny baby clothes waiting inside. "This." My voice barely rose above a whisper. "Happiness was never waiting at the end of the journey." I smiled. "It was waiting for us to become a family." Desmond tightened his embrace. The city sparkled beneath the night sky. Behind us, laughter drifted faintly from inside the apartment where the children had apparently not gone to sleep as instructed. Neither of us hurried to interrupt them.

After we ate, we moved to the big couch in front of the stone fireplace. The snow outside started falling harder. “The forecast says it might get bad tonight,” Brandon said, glancing out the window. “Good thing we’re stocked up.” Yve smiled and poured me another glass of wine. “Perfect for a cozy weekend. No work, no stress… just us.” A few hours later, the wind howled outside and the snow was coming down in thick sheets. We played cards, laughed, and drank more wine. Yve got sleepy first and kissed Brandon goodnight before heading to their bedroom.
