Slowly I withdrew, exhaling. The coroner was Trevor Gaines, who was a lot older, with graying temples and metal framed glasses that always hung low on the bridge of his nose. “Ah, Luna Aurora is here too,” Trevor bowed in greeting. “Doctor Gaines, please,” I gestured for him to rise. He straightened, and then turned to Declan who stood beside me. Then he began to explain, his voice dry with a slight pitchiness to the ends of it. “The bodies match the attacks quite well, Beta Declan,” Trevor began to explain. “They all have scratches made with claws on them, though not all the blood on them is theirs. There seems to have been at least one enemy dead from the looks of it.”

“Who—” The wolf rose, shaking out its thick coat before stepping into the shadows. Selene tried to push herself upright, but pain lanced through her side. She hissed, pressing a hand to her ribs. Cracked, at least. Maybe broken. The river had done a number on her, and the fight before that hadn’t helped. A sound drew her attention back to the cave entrance. The wolf was gone. In its place stood a man. He was tall—lean muscle wrapped in dark leathers, his long coat damp from the rain outside. His hair was black, falling past his shoulders in tangled waves, and his face was sharp, striking, with an edge that spoke of something dangerous.
