Her body flinched—just once—but then melted into mine like she’d been holding herself up for too long and finally gave in. And that was when I heard it. Her cry. Her actual voice. It was low, ragged, not quite formed into words, but it was there. The sound of grief. Of pain. Of her. My heart thudded in my chest. God. I didn’t know what to do with that sound. I didn’t know if I should be relieved or broken all over again. It felt like hearing someone speak after a lifetime of silence. Tears stung the corners of my eyes.

Darkness swallowed Sophia whole. For a moment, there was nothing but a suffocating silence, a void that held her suspended between life and death. Then, all at once, everything crashed back into her senses—cold, rushing water, a fierce current pulling her under, and the frantic pounding of her heart that thundered in her ears.

But the noise wasn't coming from around her — the noise was coming from deep inside her ear. It a mixture of different unpleasant noises — battle cries and the noises of warriors going against each other, the clashes of swords, the bone–cracking and shifting of wolves, the growling and howling, and then the sound of wolves tearing apart each other and the pained screams from those that are injured. She heard the frightful screams of women and children and innocent blood being shed, innocent lives being destroyed, properties, houses and buildings being set ablaze.
