Steam billowed in the space around me, clouding the air and fogging up the transparent glass walls, making it impossible to see through them. Not that I could see anyway. I scream for my pack. For my family. For the fire that took them and the man who laughed while it burned. I scream for myself. For the girl I used to be. For the woman I've become. I didn’t want to let on that I was scared by his little tale but I still couldn’t stop blurting out, “What’s out there?” As if in answer, loud and shrilling howl pierced the air which was followed by many others. Darius pointed his head toward the window, “Did you hear that? That is not any howl. That is actually the Cry of Hunger.” My eyebrows dipped lower, “Cry of Hunger?” It was the first time I heard the term.

Her body flinched—just once—but then melted into mine like she’d been holding herself up for too long and finally gave in. And that was when I heard it. Her cry. Her actual voice. It was low, ragged, not quite formed into words, but it was there. The sound of grief. Of pain. Of her. My heart thudded in my chest. God. I didn’t know what to do with that sound. I didn’t know if I should be relieved or broken all over again. It felt like hearing someone speak after a lifetime of silence. Tears stung the corners of my eyes.

Or maybe it was me. Lucas stood frozen, unmoving. I took a deep breath and wiped my tears away with trembling fingers. “Even if I were truly guilty, these five years have cost me everything—my parents, my brother, five unborn children, and the betrayal and torment from the man I loved! “No crime, no matter how grave, could demand greater penance! And the truth is, I didn’t kill Grandma!" The sobs tore through me before I forced myself to steady. "I’m exhausted. Now that you’ve seen the truth, just… leave."

The sound she heard earlier was frightening to her. There were the sound of Wolves howling in pain. Cracking of bones in a painful and excruciating ways. Cries for help was heard followed by the sound of the doors and windows locked. “T-teddy, are you.. are you still there?” Crystal whispered her words being afraid on what was there around her. She could not see or move much. Despite trying to get free and hurt her hands more, it proved to be useless as the rope was far tighter around her wrist, “Help me. Someone please, help us”

Darkness swallowed Sophia whole. For a moment, there was nothing but a suffocating silence, a void that held her suspended between life and death. Then, all at once, everything crashed back into her senses—cold, rushing water, a fierce current pulling her under, and the frantic pounding of her heart that thundered in her ears.

But the noise wasn't coming from around her — the noise was coming from deep inside her ear. It a mixture of different unpleasant noises — battle cries and the noises of warriors going against each other, the clashes of swords, the bone–cracking and shifting of wolves, the growling and howling, and then the sound of wolves tearing apart each other and the pained screams from those that are injured. She heard the frightful screams of women and children and innocent blood being shed, innocent lives being destroyed, properties, houses and buildings being set ablaze.
