She was looking at me all through with a huge smile on her face. “Is this her?” she asked, still looking at me. “Yes, Darcy,” Damien asked, and from his voice, I could tell he was tired of her bubbling personality. Darcy squealed loudly, almost blocking my ears. “Finally!” she yelled, tears clouding her eyes. I looked at her, and I was amazed by her personality. How can she go from happy to excited to teary in one second?

The heat slammed into me instantly, sweat beading across my brow, my clothes sticking to my skin. I coughed, pressing the crook of my arm to my mouth. The air was thick with smoke, making my eyes water. “Darcy!” I called, my voice lost in the crackling flames. “Where are you?” Nothing. Fear clawed at me, but I forced it down. I moved deeper into the garden, dodging toppled shelves and overturned tables, plants withering in the heat. Then I saw her. Darcy lay beneath a pile of debris—fallen wooden beams, shattered glass, and broken pots. Her blonde hair was streaked with soot, her body unmoving.

Every moment felt fragile, and I hated the helplessness gnawing at my heart. “Luna Avery,” a gentle voice called from the doorway, pulling me from my thoughts. It was Darcy, one of the omegas in our pack. With her long, cascading brown hair that glinted like mahogany in the moonlight and bright hazel eyes that seemed to catch every flicker of light, she always had a way of brightening up even the darkest times. She was dressed like she was about to go to work: a pink blouse over a white tank top, and a knee-length black skirt with dark stockings and sharp heels. Darcy's makeup drew attention to her pink cheeks, thick lips and bright green eyes. Her light brown hair was tied back in a long ponytail.

Nathan continued, pointedly ignoring Clay’s remark, “turns out he was Darcy’s second chance mate.
