She carried a black portfolio case and smiled politely at me. “Good morning, Mr. Fox,” she greeted. I gestured for her to sit, “Let's see what you've got.” Diane opened her portfolio case, spreading a set of sketches across the table. “This collection is called Celestial Whispers. It's inspired by constellations and the connection between stars and human emotions. Each piece represents a zodiac element–Air, water, earth and fire,” she described. I leaned forward, scanning the sketches in silence. The designs were elegant, no doubt–intricate pendants shaped like constellations, gemstone patterns resembling night skies. I lifted one of the sketches and tilted my head slightly.

She pulled out a notebook and a pen, placing it in front of me. “Alright, Da Vinci. Wow us.” I took the pen confidently, opened the book, and started sketching. My hand moved like it remembered something my brain didn’t. Curves. Layers. Details. I shaded it carefully and passed it back. They leaned over it, stared… and stared some more. No one said a word. I swallowed. “Is it… bad?” They glanced at each other. Sky cleared her throat. “Umm… you remember Picasso, right?”

“Yes, ma’am.” As she moves toward the flat-screen across the room, I return to the suitcase, pulling out one of Liam’s sketchbooks. The cover is bent, the corners smudged with fingerprints, but inside? Dinosaurs. Rainbows. One drawing of a house with three stick figures: one tall, one medium, one small. He’d labeled them—Mommy, Liam, and Daddy Knoxx. I press the sketchbook to my chest and try not to cry. The TV clicks on.

The write up was so small and easy to miss If I wasn't paying keen attention to the details of the root. Aidinth looked at each of the sketches and said, “Babe, these are amazing! I almost can’t wait to see what they’re going to look like after they’re painted.” I laughed, “Then let’s get to town and get the paint!”

Stefany opened the box and took out her painting equipment: pencils, erasers, and a sketchbook. Carefully, Stefany began to draw. Her first stroke was a vast wheat field, blown by the autumn wind. She then added the figures of a young man and a girl running in the middle of the field, depicting herself and Daniel. Every detail was done with love, from the smiles on their faces to the way the wind moved their hair. Stefany stopped for a moment, looking at her almost finished sketch. "Daniel will definitely like this," she murmured softly with a smile. She continued drawing until the sketch was completely finished.

"That's a brachiosaurus. That's Patterson. That's Gerald." Damien leaned in. The drawings were beautiful in their simplicity. But then Eli picked up a dark brown crayon, shifted his weight, and began constructing a fourth silhouette on the edge of the page. It was tall, blocky, and isolated from the others. Damien watched the wax hit the paper. "Who's that?" Eli looked up, giving his father that immensely patient expression. "That's you. You're my favorite, too." The kitchen fell completely, weightlessly silent.
