Near, he made the crude shapes of various of his new and older brothers: Skeletor was a small horned humanoid, lumps represented the rats and squirrels, some tunneling worms, vultures, beetles, and even some ants.

I order and watch the boys run back towards the building as fast as they can. I watch with concern as the young boy they were picking on sniffs and works to pick up pieces of his sketchbook. He notices everything, asks questions about things I don’t know how to answer.” Darius nodded, his eyes never leaving my face. “He loves to draw,” I continued, feeling something loosen in my chest. “Covers every surface with his sketches. Superheroes mostly, but sometimes just random things he sees. Last week he drew the entire city skyline from memory after we took a walk through downtown.” “Like you,” Darius said softly. “You used to sketch when you thought no one was watching.” I blinked, surprised he’d noticed that, surprised he’d remembered anything about me beyond his resentment.

Then he held the sketchbook up to her face and said. “Okay, open your eyes.” She opened them, and the moment she did, her mouth fell open.
