“Dance?” “Yes,” I say, gaining confidence. “I’m a dancer. It’s something I’m very good at.” Very, very good at, actually. But it’s not good to blow one’s own trumpet. Better to take him by surprise. He nods, considering. “Interesting. What kind of dance?” “One that helps people relieve stress,” I say, meeting his gaze. “I dress in very skimpy clothes and dance for exclusive audiences.” “Like a stripper?” “Not exactly. It may seem that way, but it’s another category of dancing,” I explain.

I should still have time to see the wood carvings before the feast ceremony. “You must wait to be dismissed!” The dance coordinator reminded the dancers. “If another dance is requested, a list will be posted of the selected dancers.” Great. I hope the goddess will pluck me right on out of here like the flower portrayed in dance. I hope my prayer is received as intended. I am not the most beautiful dancer here, nor am I the most skilled. Actual dancers enter this contest in the hopes of being hired by one of the wealthy audience members. Artists need benefactors to survive. I am not an artist when it comes to dancing but I do admire great dancers.
