Ronan’s clothes were no better. His were dark, woven cotton, layered with a cream inner shirt, black fitted trousers, a gold-edged wrap, and something that looked like a half-cloak, half-jacket with too many fastenings. He picked up one piece and stared at it. “Is this clothing or a puzzle?” Ronan asked. I laughed. I could not help it. The sound surprised me. It sounded almost normal. Ronan looked at me, then at the fabric. “I am serious,” he said. “This has no obvious beginning.”
