When he let go, he looked up and said, “Tell Daniel I’m not scared of bad men.”
“I will.”
He padded back down the hall. And I stayed crouched there, still, haunted.
A beat later, Daniel emerged from the study, arms folded, looking at me. His face inscrutable.
"I saw that," he said.
"Are you going soft on me?" I asked, trying to manufacture a smirk.
"You're the one who appeared to have just been hugged by his conscience."
We stood there in silence for a moment. Then he said, "She's asleep. Three of them, finally."
