WHICH MAN STAYS?
It skidded in a half-circle, spraying gravel, and slammed to a halt directly between me and the advancing guard.
The driver’s door flew open.
My breath caught. Was it Liam? Had Anya’s note gotten through?
The figure that stepped out wasn’t Liam.
Daniel.
He looked frantic, disheveled, his eyes wild. He held up a hand, not toward me, but toward the balcony, toward Clara.
“Stop!” he yelled, his voice raw. “Clara, don’t! It’s over!”
Clara’s amused smile vanished. “What are you doing, Daniel? You’re ruining the protocol.”
