The mechanical parts were still there, but the pulse in her neck was steady.
"B..."
Bianca turned her head. Dante was trying to sit up, his one hand pressed against the jagged stump of his shoulder. He looked like death, but his eyes were clear.
"Did... did you kill it?"
Bianca looked up at the holes in the roof. The white-hot light of the orbital strike was gone. The red grid in the sky was fading, replaced by the natural, smoggy black of the Oakhaven night.
"No," Bianca whispered, her voice cracking. "I just took the keys."
