Atop the highest bluff loomed Greystone Keep, the academy’s ancient fortress, built from dark stone that drank in the sun’s weak morning rays. We were ushered off the boat in lines. Professors barked dorm placements as students grabbed their bags. “Dorm 3A: Zara Blackwood and Alexandra Monroe,” called Professor Kieran. “Dorm 3B: Atlas King and Jace King.” I felt Atlas’s eyes on me as I grabbed my canvas duffel from the luggage cart. Our gazes met across the tide-drenched jetty. His expression was unreadable, shadows flickering under his lashes. Jace walked past him, bumping his shoulder intentionally. Atlas’s lips curled into a snarl, but he said nothing.

His dark coat shifted with the draft, eyes unreadable. “I didn’t know you were listening,” he said softly. “I didn’t mean to,” she replied, swallowing the knot in her throat. “But… I heard everything.” Lucan stepped closer, gaze flicking to the door behind her. “Then you know they’re preparing to isolate you.” “I thought the Academy was supposed to help us.” Lucan laughed, but there was no humor in it. “Duskmoor doesn’t help students like you. “Nothing. I don't know what you're talking about. The tallest boy exhaled sharply, like he’d expected more from me. “You were never supposed to be here.” I frowned. “That’s not exactly comforting.” He took a step closer, his voice lowering. “Blackmoor Academy wasn’t built for humans.” “And what exactly are you?” The second boy laughed, but there was no humor in it. “We’re what happens when the world forgets to fear the dark.” A chill ran through me. “You’re not making any sense at all.”
