Do you think this could be the story of the alpha twins that we were looking for?”

My father fell first, a blow sending him sprawling into the blaze. My mother turned, blood already soaking her robes, and knelt in front of me. Her arms wrapped around me, her magic spilling out in a crimson shield that cracked under the force hammering against it. She pressed her forehead to mine. “Live.” And then she was gone. The fire twisted, spinning into a cyclone of black smoke. It gathered, tighter and tighter, until the roar fell away—until there was nothing.
