The darkness crept closer, with just ten minutes remaining until 7 PM, the time when the full moon would rise.

They were the Obsidian Council, the elite warriors and mages who kept the Boundary secure. ​“Alpha,” a woman with silver hair and eyes like chips of ice stepped forward. I begin to smell blood strongly and hear Dad's terrified screams. I cover my ears with my hands and begin to recite the old chant my mother taught me when I was a child. He always makes those images go away. I close my eyes and sing with more conviction, but I feel like my body is floating. I open my eyes and realize I'm in the living room. I see my mother lying lifeless on the floor, her throat slashed and her eyes open and lifeless gray.

Korra geared me. Her words sank deep, cutting through the noise in my head. I nodded slowly. “Okay. Yeah! I've got this! I am Lyra, daughter of Aurora, the last bloodline of the moon!” I bit hard on my lips. I took in a deep breath, then another, staring at the flickering candles, then at the crystal resting like a sleeping star on the footstool. My palms hovered above it.

That her blood might get her killed?” She laughed bitterly, shaking her head. “This is insane.” Marie moved toward the door. “If staying with you means endangering our daughter, then I can’t do it. I won’t.” “No Marie, please, Don’t leave me. This is exactly what I feared.” She gripped the doorknob, her heart racing. “Goodbye, Jade.” But then she heard it, a sound so raw, so animalistic, it froze her blood. A deep growl.
