I suddenly felt very, very small. My mind raced. I’d heard the stories, the rumors. David was legendary not just for his wealth but for his ruthlessness. And now I was about to marry him? Everything became a blur. I remembered Elowen gossiping about him, how women threw themselves at him, how his childhood love, Jordan, had been his one true heartbreak. But why me? Why now? What was the point of this entire charade? The air grew thick as realization set in. My heart pounded in my chest as I gripped the edge of a nearby table for support. This isn’t a dream. This is real. I was about to marry David Copperfield, a man feared and admired in equal measure.

I watch him smile at some pages or gasp at something in the book. I’ve taken note of the books he likes. He especially likes the limited edition novel by Blue Bird titled ‘Rock Hard’. It’s a BL novel, David could only get his hands on because he adores the author, and Sal pulled some strings to get him a book that hasn’t even been released to the public eye yet. On some nights, David would sit crouched under the night lamp, sketching away. On some nights, he’d sleep off holding on to my hand but wake up and rush out of the room before I ‘woke up and caught him’.

"Let's just do something different today." David's face lit up as he extended a romance novel toward Cordelia. "How about we dive into a different world for a while? It might be a pleasant escape." Cordelia accepted the book, her fingers gently caressing its cover. With their coffee cups in hand, they settled into the armchair, allowing themselves to be enveloped by the written words and the aromatic essence of their freshly brewed beverages. Cordelia stole glances at David as he immersed himself in his chosen book, noticing the dimples that adorned his smile for the first time.
