The downtown area was similar to a lot of the towns Dak had visited recently, looking for the perfect place to start his new endeavor, but there was something slightly different about Christmas Falls, something special he couldn’t quite put his finger on. The Christmas decorations hanging from the lamp posts and strung around the trees were the same white lights, red bows, garland, and cartoony characters as everywhere else, seasonal flowers blooming from the flower beds while banners announced where he was and that he was welcome there, but an excitement seemed to hang in the air that he could only describe as a certain kind of Christmas magic he couldn’t ever remember encountering before.

His little sister Carol was looking forward to seeing Santa Clause. Eddie went into the woods and cut a cedar tree for a Christmas Tree. Coral was excited Santa was coming soon. Yuki's POV December 23rd – Christmas Eve I was officially in a panic. Two days until Christmas and I hadn't bought anyone one decent gift. I'd been so busy—working, baking, sewing, gluing buttons onto socks because apparently Suzu's new pastime (don't ask) is now that. And now I was stuck in the middle of a mall that seemed to have Santa's whole village exploded on every inch. "Sir, would you like to buy the ballerina nutcracker? Limited edition. Spins and sings," a man in a blindingly green elf getup informed me, jiggling the silver-wrapped horror in my face.

Though I’d seen this place decorated every year of my life I could remember– except last year— this year felt especially magical. Over the man-made tunnel leading into the auditorium, beams of light flashed into the sky as if to say, “This is the epicenter of Christmas!” Out front, literal candy cane lanes guided people past decorations on the lawn. There was Santa’s sleigh–a real, antique sleigh–painted a pristine crimson and trimmed with gold. The intricate swirl designs on the hood were stunning. This is utterly insane. Still, another thought worms its way into my mind. If he really is Santa, maybe I should wish for something big. My stomach churns at the possibility. A Christmas wedding. The dream I’d buried long ago. I close my eyes, imagining it: twinkling lights, soft snow falling, and Elijah looking at me like I’m his entire world.
