The scratchy voice continues. My head whips towards the speaker and he grins at me. His dirt-white beard twitches and that's a good hint at who I'm meeting. I try to stand but my body doesn't obey. He orders a bottle of their cheapest bourbon and extends a hand to me, “Detective Burkely James, you can call me Burke.”

Burke peeked at her through his hands, his throat raw from drinking too much so fast. “Am I a bad person?” Burke asked her; he didn't know where the question came from, but he needed an answer. Tatiana paused, smiling pitifully as she stepped closer to him. The woman sat beside him, patting his shoulder gently. "You are not a bad person. You're just a good person who did a few terrible things.” Tatiana eventually muttered. “One of them is divorcing your daughter?" Burke spat. He hadn't meant for the word to come out harshly. "I'm sorry, I'm just…" He exhaled harshly and shook his head.

My mother harrumphed from the kitchen and the whole peanut gallery now sitting at the island snickered. “Yeah, Dad.” Nat shot back at me. Shaking my head, I turned to walk back to the door as I heard a call pull up. “She said company Nat, not family.” Opening the door, I saw Derek shaking hands with Zeus. Zeus brought his fiancé, Gabby, who happened to be a werewolf from Bucho’s pack. Derek had also brought his mate. They walked up the steps and I shook Zeus’ hand while pulling Derek into a hug.
