Dozens of them, cloaked in ash-gray ceremonial robes, eyes fixed on her with unreadable expressions.

And then he opened his mouth.

Flame poured from between his fangs—slow at first, then curling in thick waves. It wasn’t like normal fire. It didn’t crackle or flick. It roared, a deep, thrumming sound that filled the chamber and pressed against her bones.
Smoke hit her throat, thick and bitter. Her eyes watered. The air shimmered so hot she thought her skin would peel from her bones. Her legs shook. She couldn’t scream—there was no air in her lungs, only heat, only flame.
