Scorpion glanced at him briefly, then returned his eyes to the road. At a red light, Spider reached into his pocket and pulled out the dead man’s wallet. He flipped it open methodically. An ID card slid halfway out. He frowned and pulled it fully free, studying it under the dim dashboard light. “Ex-military,” he muttered. Scorpion turned his head slightly. “You sure?” Spider nodded. “Special forces. Discharged two years ago. Clean record on paper.” Sarah stiffened in the back seat. Her fingers tightened around the edge of her seat as the implications sank in.

Jeff scanned their faces. “Jeff.” Kevin made his way to his son’s side and viewed the lifeless bodies. “What have you done?” While his father spoke from what seemed like miles away, Jeff replayed Mr. Drake’s final word. He hadn’t understood at first but was now transported back to the teacher’s lecture: ‘Many spiders have spinnerets that aid in putting out silk for their webs.’ Everything came into focus like someone adjusted the ring on a pair of binoculars.
