Just try.” Against my better judgment, I obeyed. I lowered myself cross-legged onto the cold stone, the book heavy in my lap, its surface rough beneath my palms. I closed my eyes, inhaled the musty scent of parchment and leather, and imagined it opening. Nothing. I exhaled sharply. “See? I told you. I can’t. This isn’t for me.”

I run my hand over it before propping it open. 'How to refine your magic: A Complete Guide'. "Hmmm…" I purse my lips together. Could this actually be the answer to all of my prayers? Gods, I hoped so. Closing the book, I flip the book over. Weirdly enough, there's no barcode on the back of it, nor on the inside cover when I flip it open again. Had someone left this here on accident? I tuck it close to my chest. Well, finder's keepers, right?

I pluck it out from its shelf, turning it back to read the summary. ‘Warning: Do not read.’ Why would anyone put this book, write it and say, “Do Not Read”? That is just pure stupid, I mean, the author could have just placed it in his desk, let it dust over and never publish it if a ‘Do Not Read’ note was written in the back of the book. I shook my head in utter disbelief and shrugged it off and turned to the first page. There was another note, ‘You have been warned.’

He will refuse to read it.
