Alexa spoke without thinking, but as soon as the words came out of her mouth a conviction seized her. She knew she could not let anyone else run the risk of accompanying a vampire. She did not know if any member of her pack would have enough willpower to not attack the vampire. It was also not known how long this journey would take. If caught out under a full moon, none of the others could maintain human form, especially with a vampire at their side.
Edwin looked at her, disbelieving as if he thought the woman in front of him would not be up to the challenge. He thought she was crazy to leave her kingdom without a queen and go on a journey with no end. His lips formed a thin line as he tried to unravel what was in Alexa's head.
He looked away, with a smug smile, "Your Highness, not to disrespect you, but have you lost your mind? Will you leave your kingdom without a leader? Not that I have anything to do with it, but it sounds too risky!"
"I have my reasons Prince Edwin, and my kingdom will be well taken care of! I only ask that this be kept secret. Only the elements of my pack and the merchant sorceress will know. I hope I may trust you to keep it to only those who must know as well." She looked thoughtfully at the horizon.
"The fewer people who know, the better! When do we leave?"
"I must arrange things here. Just as I am sure, you will have to go back home and warn who is in charge! Is a week enough for you?"
"Of course! I'm a vampire, we are efficient, unlike some."
"Putting aside the offense. We shall meet in one week, at the Emerald River, on the stone road."
"Do not give me orders," Edwin grunted.
Alexa rolled her eyes, "It was not an order, Prince Edwin, but a mere suggestion."
He raised an eyebrow but nodded.
"I suggest you take a bite before you head north," She says.
"I do not eat your food," Edwin grunted again. Being so close to Alexa made him irritable.
"I know you don't, Prince Edwin!" She said with a sweetness in her voice. "I took the liberty to send a human volunteer to your room for you to feed on before you go."
Edwin was shocked by the Queen's generous offer. It was most unusual for werewolves to offer their servants to feed a vampire, even though he was an emissary.
"I thank you, Queen Alexa, for this generous offer. If you do not mind and if everything is settled I shall take my leave now, the sun is not generous with my kind!" He informed her and promptly left without waiting for her response.
Alexa rose from the stone seat as soon as the vampire turned his back, her mind a tumult, of pros and cons, possibilities, chaos, and stranger feelings.
She went to the castle and called for her pack and Arya. She sat at the oval table and looked at each one in turn before beginning to speak:
"The treaty is being broken," Alexa says.
"I do not know anything about it," Arya commented. "If there were any indication of that, the vampire merchant should have contacted me!"
"Just as you should have informed him of the vampire activities in our territory and failed to do!" Andrew snapped, he had been the one to discover that information.
"Yes, that's right. I have not done it yet, because Alexa asked me not to...but also… because I do not like Flavius. I would prefer never to speak to him at all!"
"It does not matter now!" Alexa said, "What matters is that the treaty is being broken on both sides! However, neither of us has a direct connection to the violations! The Vampires tell me that the warmth emanating from werewolves has increased and that may endanger their species. They accused me of creating more werewolves than allowed in the treaty…"
"Is that a joke?" Truman the youngest of the pack asked.
"No, it is not a joke, I feel the greater power myself as if there were more werewolves than those in this room! And Prince Edwin did not know of the Vampire attacks on our territory!"
"That could be a lie from them!" Elia said, looking at her queen.
"I do not think so. That is why, I proposed to Prince Edwin that we should depart to investigate what is happening, a vampire, and a werewolf with no one else. He has offered to go…"
"I offer myself!" Flora volunteered.
"No, Flora. This mission must be mine and no one else's!" Alexa explained.
Objections rose from every corner, the pack speaking over each other in a chaotic and nearly deafening cacophony. She had already considered and dismissed every argument against her they raised.
She let them speak until she could stand it no more and wearily raised a hand to silence them. All at once, they quieted "I know all your arguments intimately, They have already crossed my mind. Now listen to me and you will come to the same conclusion I have! We do not know how long the journey will last, if you are caught under a full moon, you will not be able to maintain your human form, and your instincts will lead you to attack the vampire and start a war. Something we want to avoid at all costs! That is the main reason, but there is more, if there is a need to make a decision that affects the destiny of our kingdom, you cannot contact me, but I can do it without you. Moreover, this is not the first time a Monarch will leave on a mission, leaving the kingdom in the hands of the pack! It has happened before."
"Yes, but when that happened, there was already an heir to the throne, an Alpha Born, which is not the case now!" Charles pointed out.
"I know, Charles, but I think the benefits of me going are still greater than the cons. Besides, Prince Edwin will be invested in keeping me from dying, for if I do, it will mean war between our two kingdoms and this is something neither of us wants!"
"I understand what you say, Alexa, but I could go to your place!" Arya said.
"And who would take care of my kingdom and my pack, Arya? And if anything happens, who could you count on to get in touch with the vampire merchant?"
Arya nodded, realizing what Alexa was saying.
"I want you to make the decisions together, to appear in the throne room, to listen to our subjects, and to be fair to them, promise me this, and I'll leave you alone! If there is something out of the ordinary, ask Arya to contact me."
"And what shall we say when people ask about you?"
"Tell them I'm dealing with the kingdom's affairs!"
"Isn't that going to raise suspicions?"
"I do not think so! If this happens I ask you to come up with an excuse, but nothing to alarm people! Do not say that I left, much less that I'm in poor health!"
"We promise Alexa," Truman said, his eyes fixed on the table.
"Any other questions or concerns? Before we leave?"
"I do not think so," Charles said, unconvinced. He would follow his queen's orders, however.
"This should not leave this room! The real reason for my absence should never leave this room! It could cause riots and rebellions, not to mention the war," with these morbid words Alexa got up and left the table.
On the way to her rooms, a maid stopped her, "Madam, I must warn you that the vampire emissary has already left the grounds of the Castle!"
"Thank you, Cassandra."
The woman bowed and went on.
Alexa came to her room and though she was tempted to lie down on the bed, she decided to start packing for the mission. From the trunk under the window, she took the sword, which belonged to her father, the edge sharpened, as only the Merchants knew how to do with an embedded spell that prevented it from staining or rusting. The handguard was simple with. a leather-wrapped pommel capped with a wolf head. The sheath was metal and protected with leather, it hung from a belt with a worked buckle, simple but effective. She packed her light armor, a knit shirt, heavy-duty fabric and leather at the sensitive points, metal armbands that protected her arms when she wanted to wear the bow. She took her riding pants and a black cloak for travel. Next, she chose a curved bow, along with a quiver loaded with arrows. As soon as she was satisfied she ordered dinner and left word that her horse Jax be prepared for the following morning.
Alexa set out with him on the journey to find out what was going on, which was an idea that he didn't like very much.Since she was a woman, and Zulcan's queen, he thought it would be wiser to send a warrior werewolf to that. His arguments were not good enough to convince her. They decided to keep it a secret, for the time being, their union could cause even greater rebellion, than the one that seemed to be happening. He stopped near a stream and sat under a tree to rest, although he was a creature that could stand for days without sleep and rest, unfortunately, he had spent a lot of time in the place where the heat emanated in the kingdom of Zulcan had affected him in a very negative way.He bent down and wet his fingers in the water. He had made the same route, not long ago and the temperature change had already made drastic changes. The water that had to be chilled almost to the point of frozen was already only fresh.
Alexa climbed on her dark horse, along with her travelclothes the only colorful thing in that scenario was her blond white hair in a braid and the silver pommel of her sword. By the corner of her eye, she could see Charles and with her sight of a werewolf, she could tell the disapproval on his crossed arms in front of his chest, the line that his lips made, and a wrinkle on his forehead. She didn't want any goodbyes so they wouldn't alarm the villagers or the rest of the kingdom. As soon as she crossed the gates into the open road she motioned her horse into a gallop until her castle was nothing more than a blurry point in the horizon behind her she let the horse calm down to a quick pass without anyone to talk to during her travel Jax became an excellent confidant. Her thoughts were a mess about the decision that she had made, she still had doubts if it was the right one never before in all the history of the kingdom a move like the one she had made were ever attem
Edwin felt nothing as he passed the Barrier. He had a very strong body and over time learned to control the pain he felt when he crossed the border. And it seemed, from what he had seen last week, more vampires had learned to create this force and were crossing the border to kill humans. He was not sure yet if Morgaine was consenting to all that, but at no time did she denied her involvement. It worried him because she was the only person he could trust after his father's death. He approached Alexa, looked at the horse she was bringing, and then into the woods behind her, "Where should we go?" She asked.Edwin stared at her intently and his attention flew to the tips of her right hand that were in a purplish tone, "did you try to cross the Border?" He asked, pointing behind his back, where he had come from. She became visibly bewildered and hid her hand behind her back, which meant a great weakness in front of him, "even though this is my part of the
There was no better feeling than freedom, as she galloped with Jax, even though she had a vampire, over her head, leaping from tree to tree. As she had feared, he had spent the brief moment when they were talking insulting her, or at least trying, nothing very serious, but her inner wolf did not like it very much, she knew that if the offenses climbed, she might not be able to control the wolf but she also didn't feel comfortable with Edwin, to give him the volume she carried with her, wrapped in a leather and velvet bag, trying as much as possible to keep it away from her skin. The night gave way to the day and although Alexa did not want to give the weak part to Edwin, Jax was beginning to show signs of fatigue and would be reckless to continue pulling him, so she stopped the horse and waited for Edwin to realize that she needed to stop, a thing he made, just a few trees ahead, going back over the land he had a smug smile on his face when he said, "So, Queen,
Edwin stared into nothingness, thinking of his life and his kingdom, "living in Elatre is normal!"Alexa stared at him, she had given him too much detail. She knew she was more exposed than he was, though everything that had been said would not affect her at all."Well, it must not be like Zulcan, so I do not know what's normal for you."Edwin rolled his eyes, he didn't want to tell what it was like to live there, because that would make him remember his dark past, "I also ran with the children of the kingdom while I was younger and without responsibility," he began, his lack of detail irritating Alexa, "but despite everything, everyone there was antisocial, even the children.""Do you have any kind of transformation?" Alexa's curiosity about him was funny, he thought everyone knew how vampires lived."I only survive if I take a jug of blood a day at a minimum" he went on. "Well, that's since I've known myself, so I should not have a
After what she had seen the night before, it was with relief that she saw Jax came to her, early in the morning, frightened, it took her some time to calm it down and grab it when she succeeded she rode it and kept a jog, not wanting to know how competitive Edwin felt about showing that vampires were better than werewolves, but she had slept badly after the sighting of the creatures last night and all that entailed.Night Soldiers were creatures conjured by a powerful human-made spell, their only function was to hunt the mystics, whether they were Vampires or Werewolves, although they did not see well they had excellent qualities in other senses, had the smell of vampires, and the hearing of a werewolf, the speed of a vampire allied with the agility of a werewolf and to make matters worse, if the books were correct, they had poison in the claws that immobilized and in the teeth, the same venom as a vampire and the only way to kill a creature like there was with
Edwin could not sleep, no matter how high he had climbed on the tallest tree there and seen that it was safe, without any danger around. He still did not believe that she had entrusted to him something so powerful, that he could control her whole kingdom. Very brave of her to trust him, since he was another mystical being, and one of the worstenemies of the werewolves. The collar was a shiny leather, with two black stones in the center, the buckle was silver. The glow of that object almost dazzled his gaze.Edwin put the leash inside the bag again and faced Alexa, who slept next to Jax, just after the fire she had made the night before. During the night in the forest, it was very cold, that fire was not enough to heat them, but it was already much better than just the temperature of the environment. He studied her, she seemed to be young in human years, maybe twenty-two or about that, the same age he had whe he stopped growing and aging, as normal in
Trying to fall asleep, pretending not to feel Edwin's eyes on her back, she began to feel a mental itch, an emptiness she had forgotten to check and tried to connect with the minds of her fellow pack members, but she quickly pulled herself into other fields, she still felt his strong cold hands squatting around her waist, she could not forget the feeling no matter how much she wanted it, though she didn't want to for once no one could not even admit that a werewolf was friendly with a vampire, let alone that she enjoyed the company of one, and despite the what always had been done and Edwin's bickering she was beginning to like his company, even more so after learning that the Night Soldiers were active again, it would be good not to have to face one alone, even in her Wolf. She tried to remember what else was in the stories, but her tired mind took her into pre-war history before the war. At a time when Vampires and Werewolves lived in harmony, with nothing but a small d
