A hand was sticking out from under the cloth—a hand wearing a gold wedding ring.
My ring.
Julian stared at it, his breathing turning into a ragged sob. He reached out to touch it, but as he did, the "body" under the sheet moved.
It wasn't a person. It was a mass of black shadows. It sat up, the white sheet falling away to reveal a void of darkness.
"You can't leave the hospital, Julian," the Shadow hissed. "The Doctor belongs to the building. The Duke belongs to me."
Julian pulled a small, silver scalpel from his pocket. He didn't look scared. He looked ready. "I don't belong to anyone but her."
