Another wail ripped from my vocal cords, vibrating back down, deep into my chest. "Have some sympathy! The woman had lost her child!" Damos growled from in front of us and came to a stop. Spinning around, his eyes lit up with anger towards the men. His eyes softened considerably as he looked at me. Eyeing my condition up and down, he lingered slightly on my exposed chest and bristled. I felt so small, walking naked. Halfway, I saw a naked angel in a kneeling bow position. As I moved closer, I recognized it was Doom. I walked swiftly and joined him. “What is happening?” I asked. Doom slowly turned to me, and I saw his face depressed face—it seemed like he’d been crying. He was shuddering and couldn’t respond.

By the time I reached the door, the crying had escalated into full-blown wails. I pushed the door open. A young maid, one of the newer ones I presume, stood near the crib, bouncing awkwardly on her feet with Daemon in her arms. She looked exhausted and completely out of her depth. “There, there,” she murmured nervously, rocking him too fast, too stiff. “It’s alright, little one.” Daemon’s face was red, tiny fists clenched as tears streamed down his cheeks. The sight nearly broke me. “That’s enough,” I said sharply.
