Students nearby began to slow down, whispering as they gathered around. Her friends, two of them, snickered beside her.
“Careful, Mira,” one of them said mockingly, “you don’t want her to spill her charity books on you.”
I bent down quickly to gather my papers, my hands trembling slightly. “I didn’t mean to bump into you,” I said quietly.
“Oh please,” Mira scoffed, crouching down just enough to lean close to my face. “Don’t act innocent. You knew exactly what you were doing. Just like you knew what you were doing when you stole my man.”
