Lucian Voss I was still holding the paper in my hand long after the door closed behind me. I didn’t even realize it at first, but my fingers had tightened around it like I was afraid of letting it go. It was a child’s drawing, done in crayon, the lines uneven and rough. There were three stick figures. One tall figure was labeled “Mr. Lucian.” The next was a woman with long hair, drawn with wide strokes and labeled “Mama.” Between them stood a small boy with messy curls and a wide smile. He had no label because I didn’t need one.

Nothing pulls me out of a weird mood faster than doodling. As we go through the scene for the umpteenth time, I find myself doing rough sketches of the men in front of me. None of my drawings ever look particularly realistic - my doodles have more of a cartoony, comic book style - but I'm pretty proud of how they turn out. Once I've done Omar and Mr. Grand, I move on to the person I really want to doodle - Orlando. I don't get him right the first time. Or the second. Or the third. At first I can't seem to get his hair right, but by the end it's his eyes that are giving me the most trouble. Nothing I draw can capture how startling and direct they are.

"Lilly stop, don't peek, it's not done, yet I want it to be a surprise." I smiled at him, "Ok, I will wait until you are finished, sorry that I was trying to peek." He giggles "it's ok Lilly I forgive you." "Good, I am glad that you forgive me." We continue to color. I decide to draw a flower, but my flower looks more like a sun. I never really been all that great with drawing. I am not a really crafty type of person, but at least I'm trying, I guess. I hold my picture up to show Jayden.

Eli sat at the table drawing something intense and detailed. “What’s that?” Dominic asked. “Our new family,” Eli said without looking up. Dominic set the plate down beside him. On the paper: Four figures. One tall. One slightly shorter. One small. One smaller still. All holding hands. The tallest one had an exaggerated straight line for a mouth. Dominic frowned. “Do I look that serious?” “Yes,” Eli answered simply. Lila entered moments later and slid into the chair beside them. She studied the drawing. “We look good,” she said.

"You're back! Look what I made!" I dropped to my knees and caught him in my arms, lifting him into a tight hug. The scent of baby powder and clean clothes instantly made all the lingering stress leave my muscles. "Oh, sweetie! Let me see. What did you draw?" Leo held up the paper proudly. It was a drawing of a big blue boat on a wavy green sea, with a very tall man, a woman, and a little boy standing on the deck. The tall man had black hair, just like Julian.

my father asked quietly. "God, I hope not." My voice cracked. "He's my baby, Dad. I don't know what to do." Lucian padded over, barefoot and grinning, holding up a sketchpad. "Look what I drew!" He flipped it around. A caricature - me with exaggerated sharp jaw and tattoos, my father beside me looking stern and regal, both of us sitting exactly like this by the pool. It was surprisingly good for a thirteen-year-old. "This is the trend now," Lucian announced proudly. "Caricatures. I made one for you guys."

he declared, scribbling on a piece of paper. I stood up, crawling to the edge of the bed, watching his work. Liam was drawing a skeleton riding a flaming unicorn. " That would make a good tattoo," I complimented his drawing. I couldn't deny that he was great at what he did, passion emanated from his eyes with every line, and even though it was just a sketch, it was better than most people could do with a lot of effort. " That's it, you passed the test. You'll get your shirt tomorrow," he winked at me.

She was holding a sheet of paper, and her face wore that proud, intensely focused expression she always had whenever she'd accomplished something she considered important. "Mom, look!" She held up the paper. "I made it at school today. Mrs. Parrish let us free draw after we finished our work." I took the paper from her. It was a crayon drawing in Lucy's unmistakable style. The people were large and filled most of the page, and the colors were bright and bold. On the left was a small figure with long black hair. Mom. Lucy had written it underneath in large, careful letters. In the middle was a smaller figure with curly black hair.

He climbed onto the sofa beside her and opened the notebook. Crayon lines filled the page. Bright colors. Simple shapes. But the drawing was recognizable. Three stick figures stood side by side beneath a large sun. Evelyn had seen similar drawings from him before. Usually the same three figures. A woman. A child. And a tall man with darker shading around the eyes. Silas held the notebook proudly. “Do you like it?” Evelyn forced a soft smile. “It’s beautiful.” He studied the picture carefully. Then pointed to the tallest figure.

She drank her tea and listened and occasionally looked at Lily with the particular expression of someone who was seeing something they had not expected and finding it unexpectedly good. Lily caught her looking at one point. “Do you want to see my drawing,” Lily asked her. Juliana looked slightly surprised. “Yes,” she said. “I would.” Lily climbed down and went to the fridge and pulled the drawing off and brought it to Juliana and stood beside her explaining each part of it in detail. The green cloud was the apple tree. The purple rectangle was the swing. The tall figures were everyone and the small one was Mr. Bear. Juliana listened to every word seriously.
