On the fourth morning, Silverhall woke to chaos before sunrise. Halrem had barely finished reviewing the first physician reports of the day when hurried footsteps sounded beyond the western study doors. A palace guard entered, visibly out of breath and trying unsuccessfully to maintain ceremonial composure. “Your Majesty,” he said quickly, “the northern emperor has returned.” Something sharp and immediate loosened beneath Halrem’s ribs before she could stop it. She hated that instantly. Instead of acknowledging the reaction, she lowered the physician report with deliberate calm. “And why,” she asked coolly, “does the palace sound as though invading armies crossed the gates.”

I answered, tilting my chin up toward the morning sun, just barely peeking through the clouds of artillery smoke. "The Emperor’s coming back at sunset. And he’s bringing everything."

"Mother... he didn't marry her." Her mother looked at the screen and then back at Zara. "Then the battle for the empire has truly begun, my daughter. If he is free, then Falcon Enterprises is the next move." Zara stood up, the tears from the roadside bench completely dry. She wasn't just a girl in a flat anymore.
