All I know is she trusted me with this. Told me not to give it to anyone unless it became unbearable. And now ” she glanced at the news ticker still glowing on the muted TV, Luca’s face plastered across it, “it’s unbearable.”

Darius opened his eyes. His gaze dropped to the case. “What is that?” Mara closed the door behind her with her heel. The click of the latch sounded too sharp. “Something ugly.” “You already brought several ugly things.” “This one has better handwriting.” Elara watched Mara cross the room. Earlier, Mara had moved with her usual bite and swagger, claiming the study like a battlefield she planned to win through irritation. Now her steps were controlled. Careful. She set the leather case on the desk as if it might stain the wood.
