Back at the Chamberlain house, she had stayed up late on occasion, but never this late.
Amara would inspect the rooms, but there had never been any reason for Clara to push herself this hard.
This was different. There were still three hours left before her shift ended at seven o'clock.
"Doesn't the standard workday last eight hours?" she asked the person beside her in a quiet voice.
From eight in the evening until seven in the morning was well beyond eight hours by any measure.
"It is eight hours," the other worker replied without looking up, as though only a first-timer would ask. "Ten at night to six in the morning, minus a one-hour meal break. Then you're off at seven."
