“But…” Dr. Carver pokes my arm. “I guess you’re in the pit today, Smithson.” ~ The pit. That’s what we in the medical profession call the emergency room. I call it the war zone. The people who are brought here look like they’ve just been in battle. Here is where the paramedics wheel in the victims of accidents and crimes – road collisions, fires, shootings, stabbings, maulings, poisonings. Yet here is where the real battle begins. The moment they come in, doctors fight to save their lives, and sometimes, they have to fight, too, for theirs.

Present day Sam heard the shouting and heavy objects crashing to the floor long before he saw the source of the anger and rage. He picked up the pace a bit, hurried towards the E.R., even as people scurried past him in the opposite direction. It wasn’t uncommon for fights and arguments to break out in the E.R., of course, especially at the weekends, and most especially in the middle of the night. But things could get tense and go south anytime – as shown right at this moment, at just before nine o’clock on a rainy, foggy Tuesday morning in late-winter.

The air is thick with panic and death. “What happened here?” I demand, rushing toward the nearest bed. A man, elderly, thrashes violently. Foam seeps from his mouth as his body spasms. Panic claws up my throat.

Just not tonight. The shift is normal so far. Well normal for the emergency room. We had a few cases of food poisoning. One broke arm from falling off a ladder. A kid with a allergic reaction to a bee sting. Not a major reaction thank the heavens, just a bad rash and a welt around the sting site. Poor guy had never been bite before so his parents didn’t know. I just finished stitching up my patient. Yes, I do that. Leaves the doctors open for more serious cases.
