Amber and Margaret were sucked into a world of chaos as they entered through the double doors of the emergency ward. Flashing red and blue lights accompanied by an alarming siren rang overhead. There were doctors, nurses and medical staff tending to patients of all forms. Anxiously, Amber scanned the ER for her brother, her heart pounding louder than the blaring siren. Present day Sam heard the shouting and heavy objects crashing to the floor long before he saw the source of the anger and rage. He picked up the pace a bit, hurried towards the E.R., even as people scurried past him in the opposite direction. It wasn’t uncommon for fights and arguments to break out in the E.R., of course, especially at the weekends, and most especially in the middle of the night. But things could get tense and go south anytime – as shown right at this moment, at just before nine o’clock on a rainy, foggy Tuesday morning in late-winter.

"Dr. Richard, quick! There's been a series of car accidents downtown, over twenty injured people are being brought in, and the mentor wants you to go to the emergency room!" That's the way it is in emergency medicine, on-call during business hours, no slacking off allowed. Emma Rosy reflexively dropped her phone and ran for the door while shouting, "I'm going to the emergency room, I'll talk to you later!" "So this is what Emma looks like when she's at work." I silence it and bolt out of my office, my steps fast, urgent and instinctive. The moment I enter the ER bay, chaos hits me like a wall. Bodies everywhere. Patients surrounded by doctors and nurses. Elderly men and women, their skin blistered and burned. Some motionless beneath white sheets. Others writhing, convulsing, screaming. Foam spills from mouths. Their limbs thrash. The air is thick with panic and death. “What happened here?” I demand, rushing toward the nearest bed. A man, elderly, thrashes violently. Foam seeps from his mouth as his body spasms. Panic claws up my throat.

Just not tonight. The shift is normal so far. Well normal for the emergency room. We had a few cases of food poisoning. One broke arm from falling off a ladder. A kid with a allergic reaction to a bee sting. Not a major reaction thank the heavens, just a bad rash and a welt around the sting site. Poor guy had never been bite before so his parents didn’t know. I just finished stitching up my patient. Yes, I do that. Leaves the doctors open for more serious cases.

So were Eric’s stepmother and his younger stepbrother. Eric, meanwhile, had lost every ounce of calm. He paced like a man trapped in a cage—back and forth, back and forth, raking his fingers through his hair, checking the doors every few seconds. “It’s taking too long,” he mumbled to no one in particular. “What’s going on in there?” No one dared to answer. My chest warms. "Now, go wake Abuela up and –" They get one thing right on TV about emergency rooms. The doors always slam open when there's an emergency. And tonight is no different. The double doors smash into the walls, capturing my attention immediately. The rain-soaked EMTs line the gurney, looking for the eyes of a doctor. And I'm on call. "Leo, I gotta go, okay, I love you so much." I hang up before hearing his reply, trying not to imagine the sad look he'll give the phone when it's disconnected.
