Dishes and food thrown all over, smeared across walls, the floor slick with something dark. I see her. Emma. Lying on the floor near the back of the living room, her body twisted at an angle that makes my stomach drop. One arm is thrown out, fingers curled like she was reaching for something as she fell. Crime-scene officers moved through the warehouse, photographing the rooms, collecting evidence and marking the locations of the shootings. The north corridor remained sealed. Alexander found Steve and Dan near the entrance to it. Steve looked up. “Mr. Whitmore.” Alexander stopped in front of them. “Brian?” Steve exchanged a glance with Dan. Alexander’s voice tightened. “Was he really behind this?” Steve didn’t soften the answer. “It looks that way.” Alexander stared at him. “Why?” Neither man answered. “He worked Emma’s previous cases,” Alexander continued. “He investigated her accident. He helped us when we found that device in her apartment.”

I cannot see glass stuck in him and it scares me to think of him wounded in ways I cannot see. “Good,” He says and brushes himself off. He wipes blood off his lips and I realize that is from him kissing me and I nearly smile. Instead I try to ignore the throb of my hands as I fall in behind him. “There is a car one block over waiting for us. They will have heard the shots.” For a brief moment I forgot about the shots that had rang out around us so loud I had not even registered the sounds of metal against the warehouse wall. “Who was that?” I ask him as I slip off my shoes. I will not be the reason we are killed today. I kick them away with great effort.
