Henry’s POV "Where do you find the fire for your stories?" I asked, feeling curious. I had never read a romance novel before, but I had seen the covers, bold, suggestive, and practically pulsing with unspoken desires. Paperbacks stacked in market stalls, their glossy designs promising passion, longing, and reckless abandon. But Kathrine? She looked too young, too untouched by the kind of fevered emotions her pages surely held. How did she conjure such raw intimacy with nothing but ink and imagination? Could someone truly write about desire without ever feeling it? The thought of her having that kind of experience made my brain short-circuit. I wasn’t ready to consider it.

She glanced down, silently noting that the book in my hands was upside down. I blushed, having not noticed myself, and put the book on the table. I had borrowed it from Leila in an attempt to distract myself from thoughts of escaping. But truth be told, I wasn’t much interested in books, especially not this thick tome on the royal history of Hescor. The only books that had ever captured my interest were the forbidden romance stories I used to find under her nanny’s pillow, filled with dirty language and obscenity. My nanny thought she had hidden them well, but Evelyn had easily discovered them, devouring them in secret whenever I could.

Long enough for me to remember who I was before I met him. Turns out, I actually like romance novels. Not the tasteful literary romances Kenneth approved of. I’m talking absolutely shameless books with shirtless men on the covers, morally questionable billionaires, ridiculous amounts of tension, and enough spice to qualify as attempted arson. The kind Kenneth used to wrinkle his nose at. “Those books rot your brain, Jo.” Funny. I don’t think the books were the problem. I’ve also rediscovered cheesy rom-coms and psychological thrillers, all the goodies that Kenneth never agreed to watch with me because they were “too stupid” (the romcoms) and “too complicated” (the psych thrillers).

After a few minutes, he buried his face in her neck, mummering, oh, baby, over and over. She breathed heavy to make him think she was enjoying herself. Again. It was pleasant but nothing like she had read in romance novels. Not weak in the knees, overtaken by some sort of ultimate pleasure – nothing like that at all. Ernest started the gross, annoying sweating. There were times he sweated so much during sex that it would drip off his forehead and onto her face. Time to end this. “Oh, yes, Uh,” she whispered in a high-pitched tone. She had seen women do that several times in p**n videos that her and Chelsea used to sneak and watch a few years ago. “Oooh.”

It's just that 'Heat Between the Lines' sounds like it might be a romance about books. Or writers. Am I warm?" Too warm. Uncomfortably, impossibly warm. "It's about a novelist," Emma admitted reluctantly. "And let me guess she's struggling to write authentic passion because she's never actually experienced it herself?" Emma's mouth fell open. "How did you—"

001 chimed in, asserting its presence, “Master, this is a typical trait of the male leads in romance novels: cold to the world, but gentle only with the female lead. Very romantic, isn't it?” Ernesta smirked, replying to it, “It's not romantic, it's arrogant, it's rude.” She had no interest in facing a man who always acted as if she owed him something. Ernesta didn't engage 001 further. She and Roger walked through the hallway towards the school gate. On the way, she noticed a flicker of something in Roger's expression, like he wanted to say something but held back. Finally, after a moment of internal struggle, he spoke up,

In my first novel, I wanted to tip my hat to a very influential story, Raymond Chandler’s the Big Sleep, and though many elements of this hardboiled detective story made it into my tale, the one thing I could never seem to make work was the romance story.
