It was filled with all her favorite desserts from her past life — tiramisu, eclairs, chocolate lava cake, and creamy strawberry tarts. Her mouth watered instantly.

Normal people heard a stubborn man talking about coffee. “Exactly,” she said as she opened the pastry box. “Which means I just saved you both from a caffeine tragedy.” The scent of butter and warm sugar immediately filled the room. Croissants, pain au chocolat, almond pastries, and something covered in lemon glaze were arranged far too beautifully for food that would be destroyed with bare hands. Noelle pulled out the chair between Rafael’s seat and mine. Technically, the conference table was rectangular, and the chair wasn’t actually between us.

I got up and went downstairs to make my breakfast, I didn't know if Sara would be here by now but I wouldn't let her do it since she always came home tired from work. I got butter, bologna and yellow cheese out of the fridge. When I had made five of each I put a frying pan on the stove and toasted them a little. When they were all toasted I put the mortadella and cheese on them. I had only made five for me and five for Sara. I put Sara's five in an empty pan and covered them. I put water to boil to make coffee; it was cold and I felt like drinking it, I was not a coffee drinker but today I felt like it.

“Yesterday I didn’t pay attention to the information I was given at the desk. Apparently breakfast is served from nine am. But I guess it will be a weekend.” She shook her head, “That is the daily breakfast time on these sides. I will recommend you try the madeleines.” I had been here to Seasbury a few times but had never slept over so this was news to me. I accepted her offer and she got up and disappeared behind the counter coming back a few minutes later with a collection of six madeleines on a plate. Rafael I push the little plate aside and look at Madeleine. “You pick one,” I say. “I like all of them.” Her eyes haunt me. The Italian Cream,” I end the conversation right then and there. I cannot take one more argument. She perks up and smiles, but I quickly crush her excitement with a cold look.

Tanner coughed, trying to stop laughing under the annoyed gaze of his mate. “Breakfast is all ready made. I made Saccottini al cioccolato, chocolate danish, I guess you’d call it in America. We also made coffee.” Zelma explained, gesturing to the kitchen counter. I looked over, and indeed a large number of the chocolate-filled pastries were neatly arranged in baskets, and the coffee maker was brewing. So at least they had gotten things done before they were distracted. “I see. Well, thank you. And glad your arm is feeling better. You both should probably go wash up and get ready. We have memorials today.” I nodded.

“What may I get you, madam?” Selena purred her lips in consideration. “I’d like a cappuccino with an extra shot of espresso, extra steamed milk, with a drizzle of chocolate, as well as a sandwich with black forest ham, gouda, delicatessen mustard, and a thin spread of mayo.” The maid’s lips parted in surprise and she looked at me. It just went to show that Selena was used to having every whim catered to. I smiled apologetically. “A latte and a ham and cheese sandwich will do fine.”

“Breakfast is ready. Shall I serve it now?” “I’ll take it to her myself,” Gabriel said. “Put everything on the cart.” “Of course, sir.” Magdalene moved immediately. She poured the freshly brewed coffee into a glass carafe and placed it carefully at the corner of the cart. Then she arranged two porcelain cups beside it. She added hot donuts, because she remembered Isla loved them so much along with croissants, a Spanish omelette, sausages, and a few slices of fruit. She also placed a small bowl of lemon water on the tray.

The background was so soothing with some instrumental songs in the background while the nobles were chattering with each other. I let my eyes wander over the display, checking every polished silver tray on the table. I was hesitant about what to eat and took my time until my eyes landed on those Madeleines dusted with sugar and Eccles cakes. The sweet aroma of the pastries reached my nostrils, and my mouth watered. I could already imagine savoring those in a quiet place. Just as I reached for one of the golden Madeleines, a calloused hand brushed against mine, targeting the same pastry that I also wanted.
