I just stood there for a second, stunned, my brain catching up slowly, because I really shouldn’t have been surprised. Esther grew up with four older brothers, all of them bikers, all of them rough in their own ways, and instead of being the pampered youngest child everyone would expect, she turned out exactly like them, fearless, wild, and completely unapologetic about it. She grabbed my wrist and pulled me along before anything else could happen, weaving through the crowd until we found a quieter corner where no one seemed interested in bothering us, and once we settled in, I finally let out a breath I didn’t even realize I had been holding.

Esther was in her living room, late in the cool evening, and leisurely watching a program with the lights dimmed. Ever since Karen travelled, she found herself having more nights where she lounged alone, chasing some level of entertainment before she bowed out of the fight in retirement to bed.

For one heartbeat, everything was perfect. Then the secure tablet chimed, Harlan’s seal flashing crimson. Video file. No subject. Ethan opened it. A young woman filled the screen, early twenties, dark hair like Sophia’s, eyes cold as Richard’s ever were. She sat in what looked like an abandoned warehouse, a single overhead bulb swinging above her. “My name is Ava Cole,” she said, voice calm, almost bored. “I am Richard Cole’s youngest child. The only one he never hid from himself. The others were mistakes. That was the plan.”

Whatever the reason is, I've always been this way. When I was six I remember wanting this doll. She was so pretty and had long blonde hair like mine. When I asked Dwayne if I could have her he said only if I behaved during his meeting. My mom Clara was visiting the doctor that day and made me go with my dad. I hated meetings. They bored the hell out of me but I wanted that doll so badly that I sat mouth shut behaving like Dwayne told me to do. However, once his meeting was done and his business associates left I asked him if he would take me after the doll. That's when he sat me down and told me I was too old for such childish things and I needed to stop asking.

“Yes, she is a fake.” “But she attended the prestigious Crystal Collage. That school isn’t cheap, especially for non-pack members… what am I even saying, guys even pack members find it a dream to attend…” Esther cried out in disbelief, but I remained silent, waiting for Anna’s reply. “Willow was in Crystal College based on the fees that Alpha Ryker was paying. Have you ever heard her speaking of her family?” Anna asked and I started seeing where she was going. “She is an orphan brought to the pack by an old man who is dead now. Ryker took her like a sister. He took care of her and when she got old enough, she claimed to have fallen for him…”

Without looking back, I took Esther by her hand and left the home where I had stayed for more than 20 years but without any warmth. From then on, this was nothing more than a strange place, with nothing to do with Esther and me. I was regretful. Esther lost her parents in her childhood. She suffered a lot growing up in the orphanage. She had already had a miserable childhood. But I didn't protect her well, making her suffer on the wedding night. I hated myself, and I hated that family all my life!

Now muttering to herself ‘it's past six in the morning and this girl still finds pleasure in sleeping when she’s supposed to be preparing for school’. Esther Cole left what she was doing in the kitchen and headed straight to the bedroom. She took a look at the sleeping figure on the bed and displeasure was written all over her face. She, however, could not blame the 10 year old girl. Instead, she blamed the untimely death of her husband, the girl’s father. She tapped the sleeping figure on the bed thrice before the girl yawned loudly and replied ‘Yes’ amidst sleepy eyes. As soon as the girl answered, she prepared to continue her sleep but was interrupted by her mother who was visibly angry.

Free. We arrived at the Cole Orphanage—a large, beautifully structured two-story building with nearly twenty rooms. I hadn’t expected something so well-built. It was warm, inviting. As we stepped inside, we were greeted by an elderly couple. “Welcome, Mrs. Mia Lud Ross,” the woman said with such familiarity, I nearly flinched. I turned, wide-eyed, to Jake, who was already chuckling. “Oh, Mr. Jake Hickson already came by earlier,” the man added with a smile. “He told us all about what’s happening today.”

He checked his phone and saw five missed calls and two messages from Joan, asking him where he was. He smiled and simply answered back with a text, "I'm at the Park Central. Interview. ANN Afternoon with Carie." He quickly put back his phone, missing to read the succeeding messages of Joan. When the commercial was over, the show went on and Carie resumed the interview. "So tell me about your family, Cole," asked Carie, sitting opposite to Cole. "Well, it's no secret that I am an orphan. My parents were good friends of the Hales, and after their passing, I'd been under their wing since. Of course, up until I was old enough to handle myself," Cole answered.

" Hey, you idiots, get me out of here? " Estera was screaming with fury and madness, as she moved on the chair she was sitting on in the middle of the dark hall, her eyes covered and her hands tied at the same time. She was silent for a while and when she despaired of being answered, she started screaming again " Hey you, if you kidnapped me for money, I'm telling you I'm just an orphan girl and above that I'm destitute "
