“Are we still meeting with Veronica in a small town near Chicago called Clear Valley?” “Yes, Elder Alfredino sent me there. I called Veronica right after I ended my call with him. No one in her family called the EBEE, they cut ties with them after the vampire war last year. She said that they didn’t even know about it. She will meet me there along with one of her warriors. All I know is that two humans have been found dead drained out of blood and that goblins were spotted nearby.”

She found the electrical service panel box, and when she opened it, I grabbed her wrist before she could touch the switch. “Let’s call a professional to check it, Eve,” I muttered impatiently. She looked at me and grinned. “Don’t worry, Mr. Barclay. This isn’t my first time doing this. Besides, the dangerous stuff is on the second layer of the panel.” A high-pitched squeak echoed through the dark room as she was about to touch the old wooden box. Eve gasped, her hands trembling as she slowly tilted the flashlight upward. On top of the box, a tiny mouse squeaked again, its beady eyes staring at us as if welcoming us. Eve screamed, dropped the flashlight, leaped towards me, and clung onto me.

Eve was familiar with that look each time she was talking about another man. “Yes.” Her reply was simple. “Let’s go then. Let’s go meet Mr. Grey.” There was a traffic jam on the way, with Wesley driving, he appeared to be impatient and if he could fly over the traffic he could have. Eve stared at the fleet of cars and over at the billboard which was having a picture of Sadie in an advert. She scoffed. “The crazy girl.” She looked away and stared back at Wesley. “That girl, who is she?” She stared at her nails and was picking out the dirt from them.

It’s fast and strong and could kill vampires.” She turns to me, eyes wide. “Which unfortunately happened.” “You’re faking my death now?” Lucas comes in through the back door, and Evander looks him up and down.

Pots and dishes shattered into pieces, and chairs and tables were overturned, leaving the place in complete disarray. Mayor Kingsley’s eyes were wide with anger, his voice full of menace. “Frank, you’d better give me an explanation. My son’s death won’t go unanswered!” Dad collapsed to his knees, trembling as he repeatedly bowed, his forehead quickly turning red and swollen. “Mayor Kingsley, it was that wretched Eve who caused all this. She’s already dead. I even fed her body to the pigs. Please, have mercy on me.” Mayor Kingsley sneered. “And you think that’s enough?”

The monstrous entity, deprived of its dark fuel, dissipated into nothingness. The tremors ceased, the air thick with the smell of burnt metal and ozone. Exhausted and bruised, Evie and Liam lay huddled together at the base of the anvil, their breaths coming in ragged gasps. Had they succeeded? Had they inadvertently stopped the awakening of the darkness? Slowly, Evie opened her eyes. The crimson light that had bathed the chamber was fading, replaced by a faint, ethereal glow emanating from the ceiling
