Cold sweat broke out on my back as my mind spun in chaos, struggling to piece together the truth from the fragments of their conversation. "When you spread lies that I was a servant and turned the whole campus against me, did that make you feel dignified? When you threw the bloodstained sheets into my washbasin and tried to force me to wash them, did that make you feel dignified?" Her lips moved, but no words came out. "The real poverty is inside you, not in your bank account. You think the world owes you everything. When you can't have something, you resent the people who do. You hate them and try to destroy them. You think everyone owes you, so you turn the whole world into your enemy. Viola… That's the most pathetic thing about you." Her mouth opened, but she could not speak. So, I thought, if he could keep living after all that, what excuse did I have to give up?” She shifted slightly in her wheelchair and nodded toward the empty space beside her. “Want to sit for a minute?” So, I sat down. Sunlight streamed through the window and warmed the blanket that draped across her knees. “What about you?” she asked. “What happened?” I sat there in silence for a long time. It was long enough that she probably thought I was not going to answer. “I was lied to for five years,” I said. “I lost my career, my relationship, and my family. My dad died because of me.”

“I hate liars. I just hate it when someone lies to me. Really, I hate that-” “Everybody lies.” Alice told him rolling her eyes. “You know when someone lies to me and I know they are lying, I ask myself, what does this person think of me? Do I look that stupid?” He then looked at me. “Do you get me?” “Yeah, I get you.” I replied. “Yeah, so don’t ever lie to me.” He told me, very seriously. “Ever. I take lying very personal. I’m not stupid…” “If your therapy session is over now, can we move on?” Alice asked him.

His tone was deeply sarcastic as if the idea of the Kolns would willingly leave their slavery was too ridiculous to even consider. “One has to be impressed with a guy who can lie so well,” Ellis said, clicking off the tab. “His background could have plumes of smoke rising or bombs dropping and he could still make people think there was nothing worth seeing.” She shook her head. “And he can lie with a straight face, too.”
