Knock. No answer. I knocked harder. “Hey, you!” The music got louder. I knocked again, ready to break the one apartment rule on day one. Finally, the door cracked open, and Ace leaned against the frame, grinning like he’d been waiting for me. “Enjoying the concert?” he asked over the thump of the bass. “Turn it down!” I shouted. He cupped his ear. “What’s that? You like it louder?” My jaw dropped. “Are you kidding me right now?”

Phoebe walked right to his side, making sure that her voice broke at the end. "Can you help me do my assignment? It's really hard because I am not that good at mathematics, but I heard from my mom that you never fail a subject," Phoebe said, and Ace scoffed. "You a very bad liar," Ace said. "What's the topic?" Ace added nevertheless. "Just fraction" Phoebe pouted. "The first question is....." She read out the first question fluently. "And what do you think the answer is?" Ace asked and Phoebe placed her fingers under her chin like she was in a deep thought.

“If there was one I knew you could ace, it’s this one.” Smiling, I nodded and slipped back into work mode. Math was easy. It made sense, you just needed to know the formulas for it. The simplicity was only marred by larger numbers or fractions. All of it could easily be worked out if I just took the time to do it. I went through five scratch papers as I worked through the notebook, basically double checking my work. At some point, Caleb had come back but he still didn’t look too happy about whatever crawled up his ass.

The one in the book took five more solutions before getting the right answer. "You got it, Sir," I said in amazement as I stared at the paper with his solution. But I scratched my cheek when I realized something. "But I easily forgot the solutions, Sir. I can't memorize the solution in the book so it doesn't seem to work on me either." "Don't memorize it, Sydnee. You just have to understand the concept of Math and you can answer the problems even if you only remember the formula." I looked up at Teacher Anthony again. He stared at the paper on which the math trick was written. I stared at his face and thought for a moment.
