I walk over, scanning the spines in awe. He's got history books, war strategies, records, and more. There must be books here dating back generations. “If there was one I knew you could ace, it’s this one.” Smiling, I nodded and slipped back into work mode. Math was easy. It made sense, you just needed to know the formulas for it. The simplicity was only marred by larger numbers or fractions. All of it could easily be worked out if I just took the time to do it. I went through five scratch papers as I worked through the notebook, basically double checking my work. At some point, Caleb had come back but he still didn’t look too happy about whatever crawled up his ass.

I continued, “am I correct in assuming that this is the same notebook you’ve been using since you were twelve?” “Probably before then honestly,” he admitted. No wonder it was falling apart. This was worse than I thought. “How do you get good grades in your other classes?” I asked. “Most of them are math,” he said. “Math isn’t hard. It’s just numbers.” “That doesn’t – okay, you know what? Fine. Let’s start from scratch.” I reached into my backpack and pulled out a composition book. I’d been planning on using this one when I finished my current biochemistry notebook, but I could just buy a new one in a couple days.

"Right, straight to business. I like it." Nathan didn't answer. He reached into his backpack, pulled out a thick textbook, and slammed it onto the table between us. "Open to page 142," Nathan commanded, sliding a packet of printed worksheets toward me. "We’re going over probability distributions. Since you skipped the last three lectures, we have to cover two weeks of material in thirty-eight minutes."

“This gives…carbon dioxide and water.” He scribbled slowly, and I watched every step he took, every number he put down. Then he turned the book towards me. “Done.” Slowly, I pulled the notebook closer, my heartbeat picking up slightly. Because God knows I wanted to be done already. I checked through what he did. And double checked. I blinked. “You got it.” He slammed the pen noisily against the book and leaned back, folding his arms. “Told you I’m not dumb.”

"Ugh why do we have to fucking learn that shit? It's not like in the job interview they'll ask us 'hey. What's the value of X in this problem?'" Daniella groaned. Zach sighed, grabbed his books, but then handed me one of his notebooks before walking away. "Just learn these," he said. Then he turned and left me sitting there, stunned. I picked up the notebook and opened it. Oh... wow. It was Zach's math notes. His handwriting was so neat—it looked like a girl's—that I suddenly felt super insecure. I flipped through the pages, my heart pounding. This was weird. It was just a notebook... but somehow, it felt special. It was always hard for her to focus on a topic that didn't much interest her, but on a day like today, when the weather outside was finally sunny and warm and Kyra just wanted to go see AJ, it was even harder.
