OWING THE DEVIL
“It feels like I’m just a puppet in your wild game—like I’m supposed to sell cars, then what? You want me to be your assistant? Your shadow?”
I expected him to scoff, maybe brush me off like before. But this time, he leaned back, his eyes dark as an oncoming storm. “Don’t you know who you are, Matilda?” His voice was so quiet it almost didn’t belong in a room this high. “You’re the most tenacious person I’ve ever met—and that’s exactly why I won’t let you break.”
I scoffed, unable to stop the sound. “Is that what this is? Your grand villain origin story? Because I’m not scared of your bad-boy, torturous vibe. All you do is drag me around, and it’s getting old.”
