As far as family goes, they’re all I have… and Tyler doesn’t know anyone else. The thought hits me out of nowhere. They’re my family—but is Tyler part of it now, just because we’re married? This wasn’t supposed to be so complicated. When I reach my room, I unlock my phone. Several missed calls from my uncle and aunt. Two messages from Max. One from Vanessa. A few emails—definitely work-related—so I ignore them.

Kaitlyn exclaimed. It was probably an exaggeration, but it showed just how impressive the spread was. "Thank you, Aunt Kaitlyn," he responded smoothly with a beam. Every time he used that appellation, Rebecca would glance at him. He pretended not to notice, but his ears slowly turned pink. This was the kind of warm family reunion night Rebecca had always dreamed of. As a kid, she had watched holiday commercials on TV—bright colors, smiling faces, laughing families.
