The room went still.
Even Joaquin stared at me, looking halfway between surprised and impressed. Joseph didn’t respond right away. Instead, he let out a small harrumph and returned to his meal, muttering, “At least you’ve got a mouth on you.”
I didn’t flinch. I just reached for my wine glass again, gave him a small smile, and sipped. My hand, though, trembled ever so slightly under the table. I needed a moment. A breath. A bathroom.
