I keep scrolling past recommendations for super-long epics and just wanna shout out some brilliant, tighter trilogies. Ed McDonald’s 'Raven’s Mark' series, starting with 'Blackwing', is a grimdark masterpiece with a weary, morally compromised protagonist named Galharrow. The world is a devastated wasteland split by a magical wasteland called the Misery, and the tone is bleak but beautifully written. Galharrow’s voice is cynical, funny, and dripping with regret, making his moments of stubborn courage hit harder. The magic is strange and dangerous, and the enemies are genuinely unsettling. It’s a complete story in three books, with a conclusion that feels earned and resonant. If you want grimdark with a soul and a protagonist who’s seen too much but keeps fighting, this is it.
